Protesters were seen in Abuja carrying banners and placards with messages like “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” and “Nigerians are tired of bad leaders.” The ongoing peaceful demonstrations, tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, are a response to the economic policies of President Tinubu, which many citizens say have caused significant hardship.
However, the protests, initially peaceful, have turned violent in Abuja as police and other security forces have clamped down on demonstrators, journalists, and media professionals covering the events.
On the third day of the protests, hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered at Moshood Abiola Stadium were arrested by the Nigerian police. The situation escalated when police disrupted the gathering with tear gas canisters on Saturday morning.
Human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, confirmed that the police had violently attacked the protesters, leading to the tragic death of a teenage boy in the Kubwa area of Abuja.
Despite these challenges, protesters have remained defiant, marching to Eagles Square on the first day of the protests, even after some participants were attacked by police. The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, now in their 10th day, continue to demand an end to inflation, food price hikes, and the rising cost of living. While the government has claimed that the protests are sponsored, it has yet to provide any evidence to support this assertion.
